Son Moderno

Son Cubano is traditional couple dance that evolved in Cuba during the 50’s. It was the main form of dance that Salsa has evolved from, yet Son tends to keep focus on Elegence in its movement and leading.

Son Moderno is an evolution of the traditional Son through the structural integration of elements of different dances. It is a modernization, a transformation of the Son to the modern times. The basic structure and the roots of the Son are kept intact, but elements are added. Also important is that in Son Moderno we aspire to see leading and following as 50:50 interaction between man and woman and we have a focus on effective leading and following. It provides new dynamics that correspond also to the evolution of the music itself.

The series includes 8 lessons, each lesson 90 minutes. There is no need to come with your own partner, we try to ensure the workshops have a matching amount of men and women. Please register in advance if you want to guarantee your place.

Who is it for?

We start from scratch assuming you know nothing about Son or Son Moderno. However, Son tends to be more challenging than Salsa. Additionally, the pace will be slightly higher than a regular basics class as we assume some previous Couple dance experience, preferably Salsa (of any kind), but not a must.

Having a background in Traditional Son Cubano is not necessary. If you come with previous knowledge The course will deal also with some common elements and will provide you some practice. Additionally, you will Son Moderno specific elements & details that enhance your standard Son dance.

For previous Son Moderno students, the material will be largely new, focusing more on the montuno step, moving around and hopefully segeduias We are likely to repeat the timing exercise, and briefly the basics of the lateral step.

In Salsa we have two roles: a leader and a follower. Typically men choose to be leaders, and ladies choose to be followers. That said you may choose whichever role you wish to learn.
